The National Service Scheme (NSS) is a Central Sector initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports,
Government of India. It offers students from schools, technical institutions, graduate and postgraduate colleges,
and universities across the country an opportunity to engage in government-led community service activities
and programs. The core objective of NSS is to foster the personality and character development of student
youth through voluntary community service.
Launched in 1969 with just 40,000 volunteers across 37 universities, the NSS has now grown extensively.
Today, it operates in 657 universities and 51 secondary education councils/directorates, reaching over 20,669
colleges/technical institutions and 11,988 senior secondary schools. To date, more than 7.4 crore students have
benefited from the program.
